Acrylic Latex

100% acrylic resins in interior and exterior latex paints offer better stain protection, greater water resistance, better adhesion, greater resistance to cracking and blistering, and resistance to alkali cleaners. Acrylic resins are also considered extremely weatherproof, making it ideal for outdoor applications.

Styrene Acrylic Latex

Acrylic resins, when combined with the hydrophobic monomer Styrene, create a versatile range of resins that provide improved water resistance and moisture-vapor transmission rate. Designing a sytrene acrylic resin at a specific Tg value is easily achievable. As a result, SA resins are durable and provide good abrasion resistance. Other key advantages of SA resins are ability to self-crosslink, broad tensile and elongation, excellent mechanical properities, ideal gloss and stain resistance. They also have good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as wood, aluminum, and galvanized steel.

Vinyl Acrylic Latex

With the addition of vinyl acetate to acrylic monomers, vinyl acrylic resins tend to be extensively used in interior architectural paints and adhesives. Vinyl acrylics are a good option for interior paints due adhesion to numerous substrates, flexibility, and scrub resistance. Due to their high viscosity, VA resins offer excellent peel and tack properities making them a first choice for putty, adhesives, and plaster.

Expanded Glass Granules

United Mineral & Chemical is proud to be the exclusive distributor for Stikloporas, a Lithuanian manufacturer, of expanded glass granules in NAFTA. Expanded glass is a white inorganic thermal insulating material made from recycled glass, in the form of small porous granules. Stikloporas’ cutting edge technology produces lightweight particles in a wide range of sizes allows formulators the ability to incorporate these and other benefits into a variety of cementitious and polymer based products.

Applications include light weighting for concrete, plasters and dry mixes, construction panels, drop ceiling panels, polymer concrete and 3D printing. Expanded glass also has improved thermal and sound dampening properties.

Due to their high viscosity, VA resins offer excellent peel and tack properities making them a first choice for putty, adhesives, and plaster.

Diatomaceous Earth

UMC offers a vast variety of Diatomaceous Earth grades that cover many industries and applications. Each of our natural, calcined, and flux-calcined DE grades have their own benefits and uses but all have low density, high porosity, and high surface area properities. All of the DE we offer is mined and processed in the United States. Due to the small size and porosity of DE, it is an excellent choice for filtration. The pores trap bacteria, suspended solids, and some viruses which make it a superior filter aid for industries such as pool & spa, beer, wine, fruit juices, syrup, and honey. As a part of our clean water chemistry portfolio, our SwimPool DE filters dirt, algae, and amoeba down to 3-5 microns to keep your pool sparkling clean. Diatomaceous Earth fillers are used as a flattening/matting agent in paints and coatings industry. The combination of their high brightness, irregular structure, and high absorption make it an excellent choice to alter gloss and sheen, extend primary pigments, and enhance coating adhesion. It can be included as a whitening agent and extender in white paints to reduce costs of TiO2.

Perlite Blockfill

When perlite ore is expanded by exposure to rapid, controlled heating, it grows up to 20 times its original volume and takes on a foam-like cellular internal structure — essentially clusters of microscopic glass bubbles. This physical transformation makes expanded perlite an extremely efficient, low density insulator. Expanded perlite provides a quick, inexpensive and permanent method for insulating masonry walls. Depending upon design conditions, reductions in heat transmission of 50 percent or more can be obtained when perlite loose fill is used in the hollow cores of concrete block or cavity type masonry walls. Perlite is a non-combustible, industrial mineral yielding superior dynamic thermal performance.

Silane Coupling Agents

Silane coupling agents from BRB International are adhesion promoters that work in the area between an inorganic (such as glass, metal, or mineral) and an organic substrate (such as an organic polymer, coating, adhesive). They act as a bonding or bridging agent to improve the adhesion between the two dissimilar materials. Silane coupling agents also improve dispersion during mixing of resins and fillers, and improve the mechanical strength, water and heat resistance, transparency, adhesion and other properties of the composite materials.

Water Repellent Additives, Dry and Liquid

UMC offers both liquid and dry grades of silane based water repellent additives. These additives protect both the surface as well as the matrix of the cementitious based material. Applications include mortars, joint fillers, premixed plasters, dry mix, grouts, and precast concrete. In addition to producing a hydrophobic treatment, it also improves durability against freeze-thaw de-icing salt stress. With the addition of water repellent additives, water uptake remains quite low even at doses as low as 0.5%.

Perlite Microspheres

Perlite Microspheres are a very cost-effective, density-reducing filler for water or resin based applications. The Perlite HP series are available in grades ranging from 40um to over 300um – with or without surface treated coatings for additional water resistance. The benefits to using Perlite Microspheres include lightweighting, improved rheology, reduces shrinkage of product, and insulating properties.

Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer

Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer is used as a high range water reducing admixture in high performance concrete, high strength concrete, high volume fly ash/slag concrete, cement grouting, and dry mortar. These polymers are used as dispersants, especially for early strength concrete, to avoid particle segregation. They allow a water reduction up to 40% even with low dosage (.2-.3%) and have excellent durability. UMC currently offers two powder grades of Polycarboxylate superplasticizer; R-209 and SP-409.

R-209 is specialized for gypsum, cement grouting, mortar and other fields. R-209 enhances the fluidity and increases crack resistance of solidified cement. It is widely applied in non-shrinkage grouting, repair mortar, cement base floor grouting, water proofing grouting, and ceramics. It can be used directly or diluted with water. It is the best option for applications requiring rapid curing as it provides both early strength and ultimate high strength. R-209 is a green environmental product up to the standard of ISO14000.

SP-409 is mainly used in the field of concrete and has high performance slump retention. The index of performance of SP-409 is the same as the index of pumping agent. Due to uniform particle size, it can easily dissolve in water and be used with ready-mix and on-site concrete. It can easily meet the requirement of building plants in remote areas with simple usage by mixing product with water.

Redispersible Powder Polymers

UMC is the east coast distributor of Organik Kimya’s Redispersible Powders to provide increased performance and water retention in cementitious applications. Our RDP’s provide carbon rich monomer combinations of vinyl versatate and acrylics that highlight properities such as water resistance, flexibility, and adhesion to multiple substrates.
